Who would you be in Regency England?

The Regency period is known as the period when George IV ruled instead of his unwell father (George III).  It’s commonly designated as the years between 1795 - 1837 but is specifically defined as the years between 1811- 1820, when George IV officially took the throne. 


Despite eating and drinking far too much, the Regent King (later King George IV) was a great fan of art, music and architecture. The Regency period was therefore home to a cultural ‘boom’ including the building of the Royal Pavilion (check it out here) and the books of Jane Austen. 


The Regency era was also very tumultuous. Britain was at war with the famous French general Napoleon, meaning many young men went off to fight.

    C- Sleeping (there is little time between work hours). 


    3. What do you do for work? 
      A- Occasionally hold court. However you mostly leave the work up to others. 
      B- If you’re a man, you manage your properties and estate. If you’re a woman you tend to your household or prepare to enter society with your ‘coming out’ ball. 
      C- Ploughing in the fields or working at one of the city’s many factories. 


        4. What’s your favourite sport?

          A- Hunting, although you do less of this than your predecessors. 
          B- Dancing at one of your many social events. 
          C- Football. The ball is made out of an inflated pig’s bladder.

            Mostly As: You’re the Regent himself (later King George VI). 


            You love the finer things in life such as food, parties and culture, so much so you often over indulge. 

            You spend your time holding court (although due to your ill health you rarely come out in public) and parties. You also love architecture. 

            Did you know? Whilst he was King, George IV built Buckingham Palace (where the Queen lives now!).
             

            Your diet is heavily meat based and doesn’t include ANY vegetables. George even ate swan! 

            Did you know? George IV (as he was known during his reign) was very overweight, near the end of his life he is reported to have weighed over 20 stone (that’s 280 lbs).
               
              Mostly Bs: Like Helena, Your Regency Girl you’re a member of the Regency high society, or the ‘ton’. 

              For a girl like Helena this would involve strict rules about what was ladylike, and attending lots of extravagant parties and gossip-filled balls in London.
               

              Did you know? It was scandalous and rude to say the word ‘legs’, particularly when describing a lady. The word ‘limbs’ was preferred in polite society. 

               

              Mostly Cs: You’re a member of the peasantry. 


              Being a peasant was particularly difficult during the Regency period as the war in France meant shortages for the poorest in society. Your days would have been spent working on the land or in the factories (the Regency era was during the later part of the Industrial Revolution- learn more here). 


              Your diet would have never included meat or fine foods, peasants often ate ‘pottage’ which is like a kind of watery vegetable stew.
